Sister Anna Keim, SNJM
"I got to know the Sisters and was taken by their progressive thinking, dedication to education, acts of social justice, spirituality, community living, joyful spirit, and love of the arts..." Anna's story: I grew up Catholic in Spokane, Washington, but never attended Catholic school. My faith was always important to me, and I often participated in Church activities. After I graduated from college and was working in criminal justice, I struggled to find a community like the one I had at the Eastern Washington University Newman Center. I traveled and dated, but couldn't find the spiritual fulfillment for which I was looking. After turning 30 while in graduate school at Gonzaga University, I decided to seriously pursue religious life. I was introduced to Mary Garvin, a Holy Names Sister and theology professor at Gonzaga. I got to know the Sisters and was taken by their progressive thinking, dedication to education, acts of social justice, spirituality, community living, joyful spirit, and love of the arts. It was a wonderful fit. Since becoming a Holy Names Sister, I have enjoyed the opportunity to deepen my spirituality and prayer life. I have a greater knowledge of and experience with justice issues because of working with refugees and immigrants. I have become politically active and conscious of the environment. I am thankful for all my opportunities for spiritual, personal, and intellectual growth since beginning this amazing journey. I'm 36 years old and currently teaching Spanish at Holy Names High School in Oakland, California, and studying philosophy/theology. I enjoy hiking, biking, roller blading, skiing, yoga, singing, and going to movies.
